BLUE: Fontaine de Vaucluse and Isle sur Sorgues

The pure turquoise waters of the Sorgue River start mysteriously at Fontaine de Vaucluse. It is one of the most powerful natural springs of the world and gave its name to the department Le Vaucluse.

The spot is a spectacular union between the white limestone cliffs and the green-blue water rushing down the gorges. It offers unique natural phenomenon. The water level changes during the year, rising rapidly in spring. The fountain has been scientifically researched for many times. The riverbanks are lined with old plane trees, parks, waterwheels and mills. It is not surprising that the Italian poet Petrarch chose Fontaine de Vaucluse as his countryseat for 36 years.

If we follow the Sorgue River, it will lead us to Isle sur Sorgue. This medieval town is built on an island in the Sorgue and is therefore also called "Provencal Venice". A lot of water arms and canals cross this village that was once occupied by fishermen.

Actually, its fame comes from the antic dealers and its Sunday morning market. More than 130 different antic shops are spread all over the town and have given an international reputation to this place.

Strolling around on a Sunday morning is cheer bliss. There are not only antics, but also all the other things that make Provence so special: herbs, cheese, olive oil, soap, fabrics… It is an excellent place for shopping. The renowned textiles and its handicrafts are worth taking back as a souvenir of Provence. The bright colors and its typical designs were created under the Provenēal sun by: Olivades, Soleiado, Les Indiens de Nīmes...
